Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (INN name: Hypromellose), also simplified as hypromellose (hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, abbreviated as HPMC), belongs to a mixed non-ionic cellulose ether species.

It is a semisynthetic, inactive, viscoelastic polymer commonly used in ophthalmology as a lubricant or as an adjuvant or excipient in oral medications and is commonly found in a variety of different commodities. As a food additive, hypromellose plays a role as an alternative to emulsifiers, thickeners, suspending agents and animal gelatins. Its Codex Alimentarius (E code) is E464.
